I NEVER realised what having diabetes meant until I saw my grandfather for the first time in many years. He is in his seventies and lives in India, but he was here on holiday.

I couldn't believe that since I was seven he had been injecting himself with insulin three times a day to control his blood-sugar levels. Without doing this, he would have died. I saw him injecting himself, pricking his finger first to test his blood: it seemed a pretty heavy thing to have to do.
