PETER Mandelson, former sinister minister, now the benign capo of Camp Gordon, is not one to speak without assessing the weight of his words. We are talking here about a man who when asked about his hols replies judiciously: "I haven't ruled out Greece."

So when he tells the Standard that he is keen on the idea of a televised debate in the general election campaign and that Gordon "wouldn't have a problem" winning it is not a whim. Lord Mandelson's logic is brutally simple. His man's strengths - grasp of policy and a general weight - would contrast with "shallow" David Cameron. Mr Cameron duly played to that view by having a bit of a Kevin the Teenager language outbreak on Radio Bloke.
