Vienna Phil/Carlos Kleiber (Deutsche Grammaphon, Vienna, 1975) FATE knocking on the door, Beethoven's Fifth has resonated through history as a token of wartime resistance and hope for the oppressed. It was the first symphony ever recorded (in November 1913) and is among the most frequently performed. Yet, of 100 recorded versions, one rises resolutely above the rest.
Carlos Kleiber, who died last year at 74, was an infuriating conductor, often failing to turn up or walking out when some detail was not to his liking. His gifts were never in doubt.
