WHAT expertise do David Lynch and pop star Donovan have about educating children? Transcendental meditation seems innocuous enough, but when the actual philosophy of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi enters, we have the frightful picture of children being taught ayurvedic medicine, for example, which says that pre-medieval notions of "humours" and "vibrations" in the body are the causes of disease. The notion of "consciousness-based education" has as one of its "proofs" the claim that violent crime and drug use have declined when the TM people have moved into town, but closer study shows that there are other reasons for behaviour change.
