DOCTORS are being urged to pay even more attention to waist size following a new set of guidelines that highlight the importance of "central obesity" - having a waist measurement of more than 80cm (31.5in) if you are a woman and of more than 94 cm (37in) if you are a man.

It is now becoming increasingly evident that fat stored around the midriff is much more dangerous than fat in other parts of the body and that using weight alone as a guide for optimum health may be falsely reassuring.
