Atrip to Cape Town doesn't say credit crunch like a minibreak to Margate but you can spend a week on the South African coast, gorging on line-caught salmon and king prawns for the price of a single meal in a Gordon Ramsay restaurant. What's more, you can now round off the trip with a feast of ostrich and springbok at Maze, Ramsay's latest foreign outpost, and you'll still fly home within budget.

'In Cape Town it's four seasons in one day,' said the pilot, as pounding rain hid Table Mountain from us on arrival. My boyfriend Javier and I were flying out of season in the hope of catching an Indian summer in the southern hemisphere with a bit of money left over for luxuries. What better than a massage at the new Librisa spa at the Mount Nelson, Cape Town's grandest hotel, where we took afternoon tea looking over neatly clipped lawns as Snow Patrol's 'Run' was given a makeover on the grand piano.
