Building up Balls GORDON BROWN may be against a referendum on the European Treaty but they're not so stuffy at Lord's. Members of MCC, the custodians of cricket in St John's Wood, are furious about a plan to make them pay to watch matches from the Pavilion and many of them intend to vote against it.

Now a special general meeting has been called in a fortnight, on 20 September, in the sacred Long Room at Lord's so that members, who include Sir Tim Rice, Lord (Robert) Fellowes, Sir John Major and Henry Blofeld, can make their views known.
