FOR the past few weeks my quality of life has been immeasurably improved by the arrival in my greengrocer of mangoes worth eating. The mango season kicked off in May, with varieties from India and Pakistan displayed in exotically patterned shoe-sized boxes, nestling on shredded paper. The fruits waft out the most mouth wateringly seductive perfume.
The Indian Alphonso mango has an orangey-yellow skin, sometimes green in places and often covered with sticky sappy markings. The taste is exquisite, with silken, fibreless orange flesh offering a symphony of flavours that seems to blend ripe peach, coconut, sweet pineapple, refreshing lime and sugary sherbet.See the full content of this document
