DREAMS can, and do come true, and in unexpected ways. For a long time Mum and I had dreamt of cooking together in France but it hadn't seemed practicable. That was until Christmas last year when I went and worked for the Brookes, an English couple who live at Chateau Rouzard in their restored French farmhouse in the South West of France, one hour south of Toulouse.

For five days I cooked with a view out the kitchen window to the snow-covered Pyrenees, and made sure I didn't walk in the woods that surround the house on the days when the locals were out hunting wild boar.

Cooking Together

Chateau Rouzard used to be a hamlet so among the various pale- cream outbuildings there is a tiny chapel with a round stone altar, eight pews and a bell.

On Christmas morning there was a short family service at which I spent a large part of the time praying that the two large geese roasting in the temperamental oven would be cooked in time for lunch.
