GENERAL MOTORS today confirmed it is to cut 900 jobs at its Vauxhall plant in Ellesmere Port as official statistics showed UK unemployment has risen to its highest since 2002.

Chancellor Gordon Brown and new Trade Secretary Alistair Darling met Vauxhall chairman Jonathan Browning after the job cuts were announced. They drove into the plant in a Vauxhall Vectra.
