YOU report that David Cameron has "given his full backing to stay- at-home mums" by looking at changes to the tax system (20 June). I rejoice at politicians' apparent shift in attitude towards fulltime mothers, but have to wonder why this is happening.

When in her column, even as she insists she wants to give parents genuine choices, Diane Abbott fondly reminisces about taking her baby son into work with her at the Commons, it demonstrates how politicians must remain level-headed and not let themselves be swayed by personal experience or interest-group pressure on this issue.
