A CRESTFALLEN Michael Meacher and his team held a wake last night to mark the passing ofhis Labour leadership ambitions. Held at the Sanctuary House pub in Westminster, the four-hour drinking session was notable for the high quality of the booze, with Pounds 33 bottles of Raoul Collet brut champagne easing the pain of defeat to John McDonnell. With several homes to his name, Meacher is clearly accustomed to the high life. One leading Leftwinger close to Mr Meacher was overheard at last nights event declaring that it will probably be a good thing for us to lose the next election and renew ourselves in opposition, just as we did in the past. The Meacher camp denied strenuously that anyone said such a disloyal thing. Either way, somebody is being economical with the actualite.
