IT'S POWER dressing. Gordon Brown has never shown much interest in clothes - until now. The manager of a small menswear company in Covent Garden was recently delighted to receive an email from the Chancellor requesting two silk ties and one hundred plastic collar stays.

"Gordon wouldn't have known that I am a longstanding Labour supporter," says the manager, "but a quick search of the internet would have revealed that we are one of the few UK companies to "Obviously Gordon - or Sarah - forgets to take them out before the shirts are sent to the wash, so then they fall out and get lost. On this basis, I have calculated the Chancellor will be getting in touch for another hundred collar stays in a couple of months; his calculations are clearly carefully calibrated."
