ARECENT poll of more than 1,300 pupils across England expecting their A-level results today found that more than two-thirds weren't confident they knew how the clearing system worked if they didn't get the grades required to get into their first or second choice of university. In fact, 44 per cent said they didn't have a clue at all, despite the support given by schools and careers advisers to prepare students for results day.

The poll, conducted through internet networking site Facebook by Thames Valley University (TVU), caused such concern that the university has shaped its approach to clearing accordingly, again using the internet to distribute a film to explain the process. The Clearing Show is an online film that students and their teachers and parents can watch as a guide to going through the UK's university clearing system, aiming to demystify the process.
