YOU'D think if anyone's accounts ought to be uncontroversial, it would be the Financial Reporting Council's. However, the accounting regulator could be in for a bit of a grilling at its annual meeting tomorrow over accusations of creeping regulation and the attendant costs. The FRC's annual report reveals that staff charges have soared by more than a third to almost 10 million, with personnel numbers up by a fifth, while spending on specialist secondees and contractors is up by two thirds. Can chief executive Paul Boyle justify all this, or indeed his apparent 20% pay rise to 312,000?

OH dear. The latest issue of the UBS staff mag has boss Peter Wuffli on the cover and there is an extensive interview with him inside, entitled No Limits To Growth. It includes the question: "We have seen several high-profile departures in the US during the first half of the year. Is UBS still an attractive employer?" Replies Wuffli: "We - of course - always regret it when talented employees choose to move on. However, UBS today, with its business strength, its brand charisma and its staff of 80,000, does not depend on individual personalities." Just as well, since Wuffli has just been ousted as chief executive.
