WILL someone please give Rick Haythornthwaite, pictured, a proper job? After butting his head against a brick wall for three years at Invensys, the only thing keeping the muscular Haythornthwaite busy is his role as chair of the Government's oxymoronic Better Regulation Commission. Cue Centrica, the British Gas group which is reckoned to have passed over all its more-than-able internal candidates to fill the shoes of departing chief executive Sir Roy Gardner. Word is the Centrica board wants someone with upstream energy experience: Haythornthwaite has 20 years of it, and in the North Sea, having once worked for BP and Premier Oil.

PHILIP GREEN is on the blower (it's been a while). He's annoyed City Spy poked fun at his purchase at a charity do of a picture of Harrods boss Mohamed Fayed. Next year, he threatens, instead of a fundraising exhibition of top retailers (Fayed's mug - bought by Green for Pounds 5000 - was on display, along with the likes of Marks Spencer's Stuart Rose, for whom there were no takers), he will suggest they put up pictures of journalists and invite bids.
