Summary
Cinderella is so much part of our theatrical landscape, it's easy to forget that as well as being a rags-to-riches fairytale, it's also the story of childhood bullying, parental shortcomings and the importance of good connections (where would Cinders be without her Fairy Godmother?). Although Frederick Ashton handles these themes very gently, they're still in his ballet if you look closely. Originally made in 1948, Ashton's Cinders is a sweet-natured, loyal daughter, while the Ugly Sisters are weak, forlorn creatures.
In its Christmas run, most of the Royal Ballet's top dancers appear in the piece, with this week's three performances led by Tamara Rojo and Jonathan Cope (Fri 10 Wed 15 Dec). Anthony Dowell (right) and Wayne Sleep are the gruesome twosome. On Thur 16 Dec, Jaimie Tapper and David Makhateli are the heroine and hero, with the excellent Thiago Soares and Philip Mosley as the Ugly Sisters. Music is the Prokofiev.See the full content of this document
