It's episode 3 of the Pre-Rapaelite drama, and the Ruskin marriage is in crisis. Ruskin has arranged for Millais to paint his wife, Effie, who, after five years of unconsummated marriage, is in a state of simmering erotic agitation. They get as far as the bedroom, but nothing happens. "You are familiar with the necessary procedure?" ventures Effie. "I have studied Leda and the Swan," says Millais, warily.
