HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVE 9pm, Channel 4 Sponsoring a child from the third world has become fashionable. Tonight's documentary explores what would happen if the same principle were applied at home. The Gumpo family live less than 100 miles from the Brotherstons, but their lives could hardly be more different. Nine- year-old Grace Brotherston has acres of garden to play in. Ten-year- old Yolande Gumpo isn't allowed outside because it's too dangerous. The emotional and financial meeting between their families raises more tricky questions than an hour-long documentary can cope with.

ARENA: THE HUNT FOR MOBY-DICK 11.20pm, BBC2 The Samuel Johnson prize is the UK's richest literary prize for non-fiction, and earlier this month Philip Hoare won it for Leviathan, his account of an obsession with whales in nature and literature. This Arena, first screened last autumn, follows Hoare on a journey that takes him from Southampton to the whaling ports of New England in pursuit of the whale-haunted seascape described in Moby-Dick, Herman Melville's great novel of human obsession with a cetacean.
