PRESIDENT Jacques Chirac made a plea to French voters to shun extremism as he announced he would not seek re-election next month. Mr Chirac, 74, who has been head of state since 1995 and in politics for 45 years, said: "Never compromise with extremism, racism, anti- Semitism or the rejection of others." Mr Chirac, whose chequered career leaves a difficult legacy, added: "Not for one minute have I ceased to serve this magnificent France."
