RESEARCH BY THE Daycare trust, and by this newspaper, which we publish today, shows the true cost of childcare in the capital is far greater than in any other part of the country. Admittedly, wages in the capital are also higher, but London women earn just 30 per cent more than their counterparts in the rest of the country, whereas childcare costs can be as much as 70 per cent higher, depending on where families live. Small wonder, then, that a smaller proportion of mothers in London are in paid employment than the national average.
