FRIENDS of Prince Charles are increasingly angry about a wave of unfounded attacks on him this week. A letter he wrote four years ago was unearthed by critics the other day triggering the wrath of modernist architects led by RIBA president Sunand Prasad.

Charles's eccentric habit of writing hand-written letters to key players is well known. But thin-skinned designers and their followers are feigning horror that some of them concern their cherished schemes. This week's row centered on a development near St Paul's. The Prince wrote to developers Land Securities urging them to change the architect, but he was completely ignored.
