AN WILSON attacks Russian billionaire Alexander Lebedev for underwriting a charity ball for an estimated Pounds 1.3 million when the event only raised some Pounds 300,000 (16 June). As a charity event organiser I fear Wilson is mistaken.

Charities often struggle to break even on such gala fundraising events once the venue has been booked for a certain number of guests. Then there are the minor celebrities who only accept an invitation on condition that it's free, and some companies who expect sweeteners in return for their support.
