Chancellor Offers Best Hope yet for Crossrail

Summary


GORDON Brown has given his strongest hint yet that Crossrail will go ahead. At his final Mansion House speech to the City, the Chancellor said he would make "every effort" to get a deal on the London rail link's finances. Business leaders have called on Mr Brown to make funding the link his first task as Prime Minister.

Mr Brown said: "Because I recognise the benefits Crossrail would bring to the City, we are using every effort to find a solution to its affordability. I will ensure this work is stepped up but as you know the only financing solution that will work will require all parties public and private contributing signif icantly."
