THE Catholic Church got it right. In 1969, in a move to cull imaginary and unreliable saints, St Valentine's Day was dropped entirely from the church calendar.
It's not an ancient and honourable tradition. The wretch responsible for the St Valentine's Day we now endure was one Esther Howland of Worcester, Massachusetts. In 1847, Egregious Esther hit on the idea of selling massproduced embossed St Valentine's Day cards through her father's stationery store.
