TAKING inspiration from late-Sixties London and giving it a thoroughly modern kick, British mega-brand Burberry proved to be one of the hottest tickets in Milan this week so far. Many of our long- established "heritage" labels are trying to follow the formula that turned the staid raincoat company into a global phenomenon with a turnover of Pounds 675.8 million last year - Aquascutum showed a cool, edgy range last week in London in a bid to reinvent itself and DAKS and Pringle of Scotland are set to follow suit with their Milan catwalk debuts this evening. But no one can quite match Burberry for sheer confidence and fashion panache.
Sending out a collection that mixed romantic tiered dresses with sheepskin trimmed "Afghan"style leather jackets, William Morris print fine knits and knee-length oxblood leather boots to a soundtrack of Marianne Faithfull's As Tears Go By, Burberry designer Christopher Bailey turned the King's Road look of the swinging Sixties as captured by super snapper David Bailey into luxurious modern pieces with the Burberry stamp.See the full content of this document
