Commit to injecting billions of pounds into Crossrail THE tunnel from Paddington to Liverpool Street, linking Heathrow directly to the City, has been parked in the sidings while politicians argue over who pays the bill for construction set to be upwards of Pounds 8.7 billion. In the next 20 years, Londons population will increase by 900,000 and Crossrail will provide almost half the extra transport capacity needed to move almost a million extra people around the capital. Ministers have constantly sidestepped questions about whether Crossrail will definitely go ahead.

Mr Brown will be condemned by figures from across the South-East if he fails to approve the project.
