WOOLWORTHS began life not in the UK, but in the US, nearly 130 years ago. The first Woolworths store was opened in 1878 by Frank Winfield Woolworth.
The brand was exported to Britain in 1909, the first branch opening in Liverpool, and the two companies went their separate ways. Usually in High Street locations, Woolies aimed to meet everyday shopping needs and became a leader in the UK music industry.
