Summary
South's 5NT asked for side-suit kings and was also a grand slam try, telling partner that all six key cards (four aces and the trump king-queen) were present. North would have bid 6C with the club king or 6D with the diamond king. Since he was minimum for his efforts so far, he was not inclined to go past 6H to show the spade king. How would you play 6H for maximum safety when the king of diamonds is led? You win the diamond lead and draw trumps in three rounds. The only risk now is that East will hold four spades. You cash the ace- king of clubs and make the key play of a low spade towards dummy.
West shows out and you win with dummy's spade king. You then ruff dummy's remaining diamond, eliminating that suit.See the full content of this document
