Summary

A simple auction carries you to 4S and the defenders begin with three rounds of diamonds.

How will you play the contract? The original declarer ruffed the third diamond and drew trumps in three rounds. He then played the king of clubs and finessed the jack of clubs. The finesse lost to the queen and East exited safely with a third round of clubs, West discarding a diamond. All now depended on guessing the location of the queen of hearts. From the early play, declarer knew the lie of the diamond suit. He could therefore place West with 3-4-4- 2 shape. Since West held four hearts to East's three, he was a "4-to-3" favourite to hold the missing queen of hearts.
