THE invitation was too strange to refuse. Billy Jenkins, the much- revered avant-garde blues guitarist dubbed by The Sunday Times "the great unrecognised genius of south London", was pleased with a piece I'd written about his foray into the world of chess-jazz. However, he was keen to point out that chess wasn't his real passion. What really got him fired up was his local bowls club in Lewisham.

He posted me a DVD to prove it.
