LONG before he became Tory candidate for Mayor, Boris Johnson said in the 2004 Keith Joseph Lecture at the Centre for Policy Studies that his family, with English, Jewish, Muslim (especially Turkish) and Indian ancestry, could man a UN peacekeeping force.

"My mongrel ancestry makes me sympathetic towards immigrants," he said.
