Billy Connolly's World Tour of New Zealand ; Television

Summary

Billy Connolly's position as the nation's favourite knockabout Scotsman has taken a bit of a knocking of late. The alleged attempt to coin some form of comic currency from the plight of Iraq hostage Ken Bigley was misjudged to say the very least. More subtly, his store of good will was already being diminished by the increasingly embarrassing books featuring him as superman written by his wife, Pamela Stevenson. The question was taking shape within a miasma of muttering is this man actually funny any more?

I will confess to harbouring doubts. It seems a very long time since those brilliant gags about visiting Rome, drinking the Pope's favourite tipple creme de menthe by the pint, and then being sick over a small dog. Billy has since those days conquered his problem with alcohol, but he has always maintained that everything is grist to his comedic mill, and it looked as if the grist was poor quality and the mill had mechanical faults.
