A BRITISH player's victory over an opponent ranked 170 places above him has triggered allegations of a betting scam.

The alarm was raised by a bookmaker after Pounds 340,000 was staked on 23-year-old Richard Bloomfield to win against Argentinian Carlos Berlocq. The Norfolk player, ranked 259 in the world, came through yesterday's first round game with ease, winning 6-1, 6-2, 6- 2. Online bookie Betfair contacted the International Tennis Federation when huge bets were placed on Bloomfield.
