IN MAY BBC Director General Mark Thompson will have clocked up five years at the helm, but how long does he have left in the top job? There is growing speculation that his tenure may come to an end sooner rather than later, given the scandals which have engulfed the BBC during his reign.

Aunty's head honcho takes home an annual paypacket of [pounds]816,000 which is worth more than Gordon Brown (at a salary of [pounds]188,000 a year) and George Bush (at $400,000) combined. He has presided over an unprecedented series of phone-in and fakery scandals, which have included the naming of the Blue Peter cat and voting irregularities on Strictly Come Dancing. Not to mention the public outrage surrounding the Radio 2 broadcast of Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand leaving obscene messages on the answer phone of Fawlty Towers star Andrew Sachs. Ross, of course, returns to the BBC later this month and could outlast Thompson.
