THERE was a distinct note of relief in Patrick Vieira's voice as he surveyed Arsenal's timid and lacklustre performance in Munich's Olympic Stadium on Tuesday night. It could quite easily have been a verdict delivered in a tone of deep depression.

In the space of five minutes, Arsenal went from Champions League no-hopers to genuine contenders for a place in the last eight. A stunning miss by Torsten Frings of Bayern Munich and an 88th-minute goal by Kolo Toure have given Arsenal hope where, for much of the freezing night in Bavaria, there was none.
