EXCUSE me for striking a slightly cynical tone about the forthcoming British Food Fortnight which kicks off on 24 September. It celebrates "the very best in the British larder and the diversity of homegrown, locally sourced food and drink", a laudable mission.

Supporting food produced on your doorstep makes total sense, not only for the wellbeing of the population and the economy, but also to cut down on environmentally ruinous food miles. But whenever there is any jingoistic "flying the flag for British food" talk, be a little wary.
