ONCE upon a time I used to make a regular pilgrimage to The Conran Shop in South Kensington to do my Christmas shopping. After a while, though, I stopped going. On a return visit yesterday, I instantly knew why: for I had stepped into the Shop That Time Forgot.

In Terence Conran-land, time has frozen somewhere between the loadsamoney boom years of Thatcher and the Cool Britannia - a perfect moment when Philippe Starck was still the design king and the height of sophistication was having sun-dried tomatoes on your baked ciabatta.
