WHEN I heard the news about Ron Atkinson calling Chelsea's Marcel Desailly the N-word, I put down the knife I was buttering toast with, placed both hands on the bar of my kitchenette, and shuddered.
I still shudder when I think about that night three-and-a-half years ago when my life, too, fell apart because I said that word. The only thing I really remember was being led from a police cell down a corridor to see the forensic medical officer, to check if I was fit to be held. No one would tell me why I was there.
