Andrew Neather's Great British Fizz

Summary

ENGLISH sparkling wine is our best, grown using the same grapes as in Champagne, on very similar soil. The very best can match champagne and, produced down the road in Sussex, it has a smaller carbon footprint. But be warned that most of it is still not up to scratch.

Best of the bunch by far is West Sussex's Nyetimber (below), whose Classic Cuvee 2000 boasts a rich, toasty palate, plenty of fruit and impressive length (Harvey Nichols, Pounds 30; Fortnum's, Pounds 26).
