AS THE feast of Christmas gives way to the rites of New Year, it might be as well to consider our close relationship with booze. This informal noun covers everything of significance that will be imbibed over the coming weekend. Historical research reveals that we have been boozing since the 13th century, when the word first appeared, having evidently derived from the Middle Dutch busen.

Booze has now become gloriously multipurpose: just play around with the basic form and it fits all alcoholic categories from booze cruise to booze hag, a charming expression from New Zealand.
