There Is Also an Important Court ; Cyprus Update

Summary

There is also an important court ruling with respect to property in Northern Cyprus. The recent British High Court case of Apostolides v Orams (September 2006) concerns Greek Cypriots seeking compensation via the courts for land in Northern Cyprus previously owned by themselves.

The crux of this case is that in 2003 the Orams purchased land and built a villa in Northern Cyprus within the laws of the Republic of Northern Cyprus. Mr Apostolides, whose family previously owned this land, decided in October 2004 to serve a legal notice on the Orams for compensation. In October 2005 the High Court of Nicosia registered this judgement with the British High Court in London, essentially to seize the Orams' assets/ residential property in Brighton, which might now be done as Cyprus has joined the EU.
