BRITAIN'S bank crisis engulfed a second high street lender tonight when shares in Alliance Leicester crashed 40 per cent.

A last minute wave of panic selling on the Stock Exchange sent AL shares tumbling, despite denials that the company had the same problems as Northern Rock. By the end of trading, they were down 32 per cent at 581p.
