DISGRACED former Volkswagen personnel director Peter Hartz today admitted in a German court that he paid illegal bonuses to a union chief.

Hartz, who faces 44 counts of breach of trust in relation to the sex and sleaze scandal that has rocked Europe's biggest carmaker, was heckled and jostled by masked demonstrators - some of them disaffected shareholders - when he arrived at court in Braunschweig. An ex-adviser to former Chancellor Gerhard Schroder who gave him the job of overhauling Germany's creaking welfare system, he is the first person in the dock over the affair.
