TEN years ago, when my husband, Michael, was Home Secretary, he pledged funding for Addaction, a charity working to treat drug and alcohol addiction. He thought it was well-run and was impressed by its chief executive, Peter Martin. Michael suggested I had a look at what they were all about.

I was told the heartbreaking story of a girl who after school each day would return to an empty home. Desperately lonely, she ended up going on to the street each night and people started selling her drugs. She became addicted to heroin, at the age of 11.
