IT WAS, by most standards, a very desirable home. But when Robert and Pauline Munro spent Pounds 1.2 million on a Thirties house in the heart of the stockbroker belt they decided to raze it to the ground.

However, they did not apply for permission for the demolition, nor for the new house they began to build on the site. After a backlash from neighbours, St Albans district council's planning committee has refused permission for them to continue work on the new home, leaving them with an expensive building site on their hands.
